Review: Darcy Burdock - Hi So Much by Laura Dockrill
Publisher: Random House Children's Books
Format: Paperback / eBook
Released: February 27th, 2014
Ten-year-old Darcy sees the extraordinary in the everyday and the wonder in the world around her. This second book sees Darcy move-up to Big School - and all of a sudden EVERYTHING changes. Her best friend Will isn't sure he should talk to girls anymore, her new teacher may in actual fact be a cauldron-bubbling witch and, horror of horrors, her precious pet Lamb-Beth goes missing. Can Darcy face these challenges head-on, armed only with her curious, whip-smart mind and eye for a story?
Darcy Burdock: Hi So Much is the second brilliant book all about Darcy Burdock and her madcap life. This time Darcy is starting big school and is super nervous, as everyone is when they're eleven and forced to change everything they know. She handles it well, though, and soon ends up writing stories for the school magazine. Basically a dream come true for this budding author and journalist!
I enjoyed this book even more than the first in the series, which is actually quite unusual for me. I find second books never quite live up to expectations, but this one not only lived up to them, it smashed them to pieces. Dockrill is once again funny, wise and ridiculously endearing with her writing, making Darcy much the same. She's a middle grade character that could easily rival her counterparts and I'm convinced that everyone who meets her will love her!
I like everything about Darcy, including her kooky family, pet lamb, crazy hair and penchant for telling excellent stories. She's the kind of person who lives life one day at a time, taking whatever it throws at her and appreciating everything in between. She's a great role model, perfect for younger readers going through a similar school transition, in the midst of figuring out their friendships and where they belong.
I wish these books were twice as long as they are, but that's just me being greedy and wanting a double dose of Darcy. As it is I'll just have to be patient and wait for the third book to hit shelves, which will be later this year (yay!). I hope tweens everywhere get hold of this book and find a new heroine in Darcy Burdock - the coolest girl in school!
