Review: Dirty Bertie - Rats! by Alan MacDonald and David Roberts
Publisher: Stripes Publishing
Released: July 7th, 2014
Calling all Dirty Bertie fans! Dirty Bertie - the boy with nose-pickingly disgusting habits - is back for another helping of comic chaos! With ever-increasing madcap schemes and crazy capers, Bertie continues to delight his legions of fans who revel in his revolting ways. Join Bertie in Rats! his 23rd adventure, as he crosses paths with a cheeky rodent, takes part in a chaotic cross-country run, and tries to get his dog Whiffer to eat healthily - with disastrous results!
Rats! is my first ever Dirty Bertie book. I can't believe I've never read one considering there are so many, but I'm happy to say that has now changed and I'm looking forward to reading more!
I believe David Roberts created the character of Dirty Bertie and Alan MacDonald writes the books, though I could be wrong. In any case, I really enjoyed Rats! and can see why Bertie is so popular. He's a mischievous little boy with lots of big ideas and a wild imagination, and reminds me of Enid Blyton characters.
Rats! is split into three stories: Rats! (mice in the house), Runner! (school cross country beckons) and Dog Food! (Whiffer the dog goes on a diet). Each story is about thirty pages long, fast-paced and full of laughs. My favourite of this lot has to be Rats!, mainly because Bertie comes up with such a brilliant way to catch mice.
Rats! is a fantastic little book and should keep any 5+ readers thoroughly entertained. It's wonderfully illustrated by David Roberts and really is great fun for all the family. I wonder what Bertie will get up to in his next adventure?!
