Review: Adventures of the Steampunk Pirates - The Leaky Battery Sets Sail by Gareth P. Jones
Publisher: Stripes Publishing
Released: February 2nd, 2015
Wanted: Dead or Alive! (Or smashed into little bits and delivered in boxes.) Causing chaos wherever they sail, the robotic Steampunk Pirates are roaming the high seas, hunting for gold! But the evil Iron Duke has other ideas...He's determined to capture the pirates in return for a handsome reward from the King. Can the mechanical marauders stay one wave ahead of their enemy?
The Leaky Battery Sets Sail is the first book in the Adventures of the Steampunk Pirates series for younger readers. Gareth P. Jones brings his usual dash of humour while also mixing pirates and steampunk to create a very unusual story indeed!
The Steampunk Pirates sail around the seas hunting for gold while the Iron Duke hunts them. They always have to stay one step ahead, though that isn't difficult for this band of mismatched mechanical men. With the help of their trusty deckhand, Pendle, Captain Clockheart, Mainspring, Quartermaster Lexi and Gadge have no problems evading capture and continuing on their search for the world's riches!
There's lots going on in this book and it's definitely a fun little read, though not as humorous as I thought it would be. The Artful Doodlers illustrations are brilliant and really compliment the story, and it's great to be able to see these steampunk pirates come to life on the page.
I enjoyed The Leaky Battery Sets Sail and will be on the lookout for its sequel, Attack of the Giant Sea Spiders. Younger readers and fans of pirates will love this series - I mean, how cool is a steampunk pirate?! Not only are they mental marauders but they're also robotic scallywags - exactly what sea searchers should be like. Here's to more Steampunk Pirates!
